Halo 3: ODST

Halo 3: ODST

>>> Halo 3: ODST <<<

By Lisa Shea "LisaShea.com" -  reviews

A side-story taking place in the Halo universe, "ODST" puts you in the role of the titular Orbital Drop Ship Trooper - a regular marine compared to the Master Chief, the series' normal protagonist. Using the basic gameplay and graphics of Halo 3, ODST is neat and different in some ways and disappointingly samey in others.
ODST follows a squad of drop troopers - primarily through the eyes of Rookie, a silent protagonist. Rookie proceeds through the abandoned, dead city of New Mombasa looking for records of his teammates, who he was separated from. Finding these records allows you to play a segment as another trooper - Buck, the leader, Mickey, the tech specialist, Dutch, the tough guy, or Romeo, the sniper.

Rookie's segments are really freeform and open - you explore the city, going through apartments and back alleys and occasionally running into random patrols of Covenant soldiers. The city's AI, the Supervisor, will occasionally try to get your attention by hijacking various city systems - signs will change to point you in the right direction, phones will start ringing, ticket machines will start spewing tickets, crosswalks and traffic lights will change, and so on. These directions will lead you to audio diaries - clues to a side-story - or weapon/ammo caches. All in all, it makes for a really great feel - almost to the level of Silent Hill - and it's backed up by some of the best music in the series.
The action stages are pretty good, too, but far more traditional. There is some openness in the levels, but for the most part they're similar to normal Halo 3. This is where the main promise of ODST - the fact that you're playing as a normal soldier - kind of falls flat. You can basically do everything that the Master Chief can do, including but not limited to flipping over cars and punching through tanks. Your health works slightly differently, but it still basically equates to "if you get hit, go duck behind cover until you recover". You can get away with running up to Brutes and punching them in the face until they die. All in all, you basically demonstrate the same level of "super-soldier" that the actual super soldiers have, as opposed to having to rely on your wits and your guns to overcome your weakness.
In addition to the campaign mode, ODST also offers a four-person co-op mode called "Firefight". In this mode, the human players attempt to hold out as long as they can against waves of Covenant troops. Like Gears of War 2's Horde mode, this can be a blast with the right people. To add a bit of difficulty into the mix, each wave of Covenant has a special effect attached to them - the ability to dodge grenades, or being more resistant to plasma, and so on. This ensures that the endless waves of Covenant continue to be challenging for as long as you play.

The graphics are similar to Halo 3's, but the urban environment is much more well-designed than those in Halo 3. A lot of care went into designing the city and the various signs and objects scattered around it, and the end result feels pretty natural. The sound is really good, too. The most obvious change, sound-wise, is that an injured ODST will pant and groan realistically instead of offering a single grunt like the Master Chief does. This makes it feel a lot more immersive, and is almost worth the fact that - for game reasons - you can heal up really easily and dying's not really that big of a deal.
On the whole, I understand why ODST didn't take a more realistic approach, but that doesn't mean it's not disappointing. As a game, ODST is good, but with some eye-rolling flaws that could've been turned into something more meaningful than "another Halo game".

Xbox 360 60GB LIVE Starter Pack

Xbox 360 60GB LIVE Starter Pack

By James Thornberry (Cincinnati, OH USA) -  reviews

This is a great starter pack. If you were someone who purchased the XBOX360 Arcade, this is a great addition for the recreational gamer. The 60GB hard drive offers plenty of space to store saved game data, music, movies, pics, and anything else you feel like putting on it. The headset is just the standard XBOX360 headset which does work, but if you dont like the 90's Walkman design, then I would highly recommend buying the wireless one that XBOX has available. Now to the best part of the starter pack, XBox Live. XBox Live is the online domain that hundreds of thousands of XBox users are connected by. With XBox Live you can play games online with friends, send messages, chat via headset, or simply play online with random people. I recommend to any XBox customer to invest in XBox Live because it takes the gaming experience to a completely different level.

Xbox 360 Live 1600 Points

Xbox 360 Live 1600 Points

By Zeph Greenwell (Decatur, IL) -  reviews

This review is from: Xbox 360 Live 4000 Points (Video Game)

This is a great denomination to release Microsoft points in. Since most games on Xbox Live Arcade are purchased in 400 point ($5) increments this card give you the ability to download ten 400 point games or five 800 point games or some other combination (you get the idea). $50 is also a much more acceptable amount than the $62.50 for 5000 points. Since this is on a card it makes this possible to give as a gift or buy without using a credit card. This would be a worthwhile purchase for anyone with an Xbox 360 and Xbox Live.

Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Pink

Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Pink

By Sinister Crayon "Crayon" (Golden, CO USA) - reviews

Ok, so this is basically just the white controller painted black. To be honest, the white controllers don't look too bad, its the white console that looks terrible. But that is my opinion. On to the facts. The black controller is almost exactly the same, but part of the grip is more "matte" than the white one. The white controller always makes me sweat for some reason because it is too smooth. These look great however. The colors are well matched even though it may not look like it in the pictures. I'd definitely recommend picking these up if you have an elite, or if you have core/premium and you want the black ones so the grime doesn't show as much, I'd highly recommend these.

Xbox 360 Controller

Xbox 360 Controller

By Trevor Burgan (Laguna Niguel, CA USA) - reviews

I bought this controller (Windows XP version) to use with Prince of Persia - The Two Thrones. After some difficulty getting the game to recognize the controller and then some additional adjustment - this controller works great with this game and even features RUMBLE effects! To get this to work properly, I copied the xinput9_1_0.dll file into the game directory and reduced the gamepad speed to .5. After I did this, it eliminated the "drift" I was suffering and made the whole experience great. I rated 4 stars because of the difficulty in setup. But the actual controller feels great in your hand and makes game play much easier than using a mouse/keyboard.

Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows

Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows

By R. Arrigo (California) -  reviews

I've owned the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows device for about a week, and the only thing I am unhappy about is that I waited so long to buy this controller.

Combined with Xpadder, a free program that lets you emulate key presses and mouse movements directly from the controller (google the program), the 360 controller has become a great way to websurf, play games (e.g. Gears of War, Resident Evil 4), and even control media applications such as Cyberlink PowerDVD. If you don't want to bother programming the Xpadder software yourself, you can download predefined profiles for each of your programs and modify them as you see fit. The range of the controller is sufficient for me, but I have a pretty small apartment :-) I do not know how long the batteries will last and I am considering getting some kind of rechargeable setup. I've run this controller on both Windows XP and Windows Vista without any bugs or other problems.

Overall, I rate this product a 4.5/5.0 stars. The only modification I would make to the controller is to disable it's 'auto-off' feature that shuts down the controller automatically after around 10 - 15 minutes of disuse. When you are reading a web page for a long period of time or watching a movie, having to hit the 'on' button on the center of the pad before you can use the controller again is a minor annoyance. However, for most people who will use this controller primarily for gaming, this is not a problem at all and is instead a battery preserving feature, thus the deduction of only 0.5 stars.

I highly recommend this product.

I recently purchased a refurbished xbox360. It was a great buy. Fast shipping too. I had some trouble with it shortly after I got it, but no worries, the seller offers a 90 day warrant. I emailed him and he responded right away to get it back to him. He fixed it and had it back to me within 3 days. Great service and a great buy. If you're looking to save some money, but got to have a 360 buy one refurbished. With a good warranty you can't go wrong.

Xbox 360 Elite HDMI Console with XCM Black Knight LED

Xbox 360 Elite HDMI Console with XCM Black Knight LED Case Modification

By The DarkMan "The Light House" (Houston, Texas United States) -  reviews

I've had this unit now for a few weeks and truly love it!! I first purchased this unit to ensure that I received the very latest console with the Jasper chipset; My previous console (purchased in 2005) finally succumbed to the dreaded 3rod and I felt that this was good time to upgrade to the latest model with the HDMI connector; Trying to find a console with the latest Jasper chipset is like searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack and while I truly wanted the latest chipset I also wanted a console with a bit of personality. And that is what this console provides, it is visually stunning to look at and the performance is excellent! The drive is very quiet and there is virtually no noise or vibration from the unit when it is on. I am what you might call a marathon gamer (I game for as long as 7 or 8 hours sometimes) and one thing I appreciate is that this unit does not freeze or have the dreaded 'Disk read error'. All in all a very beautiful and functional unit!!
